Festa Italiana: My favorite event

Festa Italiana is my favorite event held on Pioneer Courthouse Square. Long before I stared doing this blog, I always tried to check it out each year. Although, I’m not of Italian descent, I love the food, music, dancing and the general atmosphere of Festa Italiana. Most of all I like the way the organizers conduct the event. They don’t close off the square, and require a donation or admission fee to attend. They leave it open to anyone who wants to wander in, even if they have never heard of Italy. Several local Italian restaurants offer Italian Food, Wine/Beer Garden, Nonstop Entertainment and Dancing in the Square for four days, Thursday through Sunday. Congratulations on this year’s terrific event. I’m already looking forward to next year.

The Stanley Cup

The Stanley Cup is the famous trophy that goes to the winner of National Hockey League Championship each year. Thanks to Tom McVie (top photo), hundreds of Portland hockey fans had the opportunity to be photographed standing next to the Stanley Cup, at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Tom played for the Portland Buckaroos hockey team from 1961 to 1966. He was also a head coach in the National Hockey League for several seasons. Tom currently works for the Boston Bruins, the current NHL Champions, who are in possession of the prized Stanley Cup. The Boston Bruins let members of their staff borrow the cup and take it to a city of their choice to be viewed. Tom had the opportunity to take the cup somewhere, and decided to bring it to Portland. Is that cool or what! For a hockey fan, being photographed with the Stanley Cup would be a super thrill. A lot of hockey fans from our city are sitting at home tonight with big smiles on their faces. Thanks Tom, that was huge! Members of the Portland Winterhawks were on hand to sign autographes, and kids had a chance to sharpen thier goal shooting skills.

Noon Tunes: The Builders and the Butchers

There was a great crowd on hand today for Noon Tunes. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the band. KINK and Muve Music do a great job lining up the music and sponsoring the events. Anyone who missed the concert today can check out the group on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/thebuildersandthebutchers

Shaniko to Pearl Harbor

Bob Weber woke up on Sunday morning December 7, 1941, to the sound of machine guns and bombs exploding in Pearl Harbor. He had spent the previous night on the submarine base in the Pearl Harbor. Bob was the son of Joe Weber, a sailor from Shaniko, Oregon. At the time of the attack Bob was eleven years old, and had no idea he was witnessing the most devastating attack ever launched on the United States. His escape and eventual evacuation is an interesting part of history. Later in life he related the entire story to his wife Trinette. I met Trinette and her daughter at the NW Book Festival held on Pioneer Courthouse Square. They told me about the book they had written to honor Bob and tell the story of his extrodinary adventure. To learn more about the book, check out their website: http://www.pearlharboreyewitness.com/
